Filipino American History Month
Dear SFUSD Families:

Happy National School Lunch Week! Did you know that Student Nutrition Services within San Francisco Unified School District runs the largest public food service operation in San Francisco – serving more than 35,000 breakfast, lunch, and supper meals daily? Every day, 220 extraordinary dining staff members across 125 schools nourish a diverse population of 51,000 students who collectively speak more than 44 different languages. All school meals are offered at no cost to students. I have particularly enjoyed visiting our new kitchens during my school visits. In our new kitchens we prepare fresh meals on site that the students love. It’s great to hear students actually excited about school lunch!  Learn more about our nutrition program.

October is also the month of one of my favorite holidays - Halloween! I look forward to visiting our schools on this day … in costume of course. Keep reading this month’s newsletter for tips on how to enjoy a safe and fun Halloween.

San Francisco motorcycle culture comes to the classroom
Four years ago, June Jordan School for Equity — a small high school on the edge of McLaren Park — started offering a motorcycle design, maintenance and operation course. It’s the only school in the country to offer a class that teaches students everything from motorbike anatomy to responsible riding.
For first time, health clinic opens at John O’Connell High
The district had hired a nurse for this year, but John O’Connell has upped the ante: For the first time, O’Connell opened a clinic staffed with physicians and nurses who can prescribe medicine and perform specific examinations — an uncommon resource among many high schools.
